Cal was born April 7, 1943, in Rapid City, South Dakota, to Ralph (38) and Stella (25) Shrull. He was the third of four children. His Family soon moved from their ranch in South Dakota to Northern California where he lived in Rio Dell, Scotia, and Fortuna. He graduated from Fortuna High School and married his high school sweetheart, Edith Rocha, right after graduation. While living is Scotia he worked at the Pacific Lumber Company in the Red Woods with his father and brothers.
Cal and Edith had three children, Rebecca "Becky", Robert "Bobby" and Calvin "Chopper" Jr. As a family they lived in Fortuna and Felton, California. Cal had a love for animals and while in Felton they had dogs, cats, chickens, rabbits, pigeons, and horses. In the early 70's, Cal and Edith separated; Cal, Becky, Bobby, and Chopper moved to Colorado to be with his brother.
While in Colorado, Cal, his three children, two brothers, their families and Uncle Bill lived in Livermore and ran the Lazy L Ranch. They would perform in the communities and at schools with Wild West performances, quick draw competitions, and telling Native American stories. They worked hard and played harder.
They would frequent the Red Feather Café where he met his second wife, Sharee Stevens, the daughter of the owners (Kenneth and Louise Stevens). They were married in Fort Collins, Colorado, on November 28, 1975. Cal and Sharee lived in Northern Colorado for 16 years and had two daughters: Angela (Angie) and Caree.
Cal started his own roofing company, Mountain States Roofing, and worked in various other places such as Lone Star Steel, Fox Acres, and at night you could find him bartending at the Café. He always said he made the best Bloody Mary's. In the winters, Cal would go back to California to help his cousin Bob with Shrull and Sons Roofing in Gilroy California. Cal was the first person to do a shake roof that was intertwined with a pattern.
After their divorce, Cal and his daughter, Caree, moved to Fort Collins for a couple of years where he met the love of his life, Denise Martin. Denise was from Washington, and they were introduced by his Sister-In-Law Maggie Shrull. Distance knew no barriers for them, Cal and Dee started to write letters back and forth where their love grew. Denise and her son, Brian, moved to Cope, Colorado to be with Cal. While in Cope, Cal worked for the Arikaree School District, he roofed, and helped run Dee's Café. They also lived in Woodrow where they both worked for the School District. Cal built a custom fiber optics system for the entire district.
In 2000, Cal and Dee moved to the Denver area living in Wheatridge, Thornton, and finally settling down in Broomfield. Cal worked for Flat Irons Mall as a Construction Manager hand building all the kiosks you see today. While in Broomfield, he lost the love of his life, Dee, to cancer.
After Dee passed, Cal moved to Northern Colorado and lived in Milliken, Wellington, Fort Collins, Eaton, and Greeley. Durning these times, Cal worked as a Maintenance Supervisor for a HUD Disability Housing. In 2009, Cal decided it was time to retire.
Cal was an avid hunter, fisherman, lover of animals and nature. He loved his Native American ancestry and donated money to children on the reservation. He was a St Joseph's Dream Catcher.
There wasn't anything Cal couldn't do. He could build or fix anything. He spent his retirement making jewelry, covered wagons, and his greatest joy of all, his family. Cal had the biggest heart, best smile, contagious laugh, best storyteller, and he never met a stranger.
Cal is survived by Rebecca "Becky" Shrull, of Brighton, CO; Robert "Bobby" Shrull, of Westwood, CA; Calvin "Chopper" Shrull, Jr. (Heather Williams), of Fort Collins, CO; Dominic "Nick" Bond, of Lakewood, CO; Angela "Angie" (Floyd) Gardner, of Wellington CO; Brian (Ashley) Bond, of Round Lake Beach, IL; and Caree (Dennis) Rinebarger, of Eaton, CO; Sister Linda (Dave) Nicholson, of Lewiston, ID; along with 19 Grandchildren, 1 Grand cat, 15 Great-Grandchildren and 1 Great-great Grandchild; and many nieces and nephews that were all very special to him.
