Arthur W. Zimmerman

Arthur Warren Zimmerman passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early morning hours of June 29, 2018 in Fort Collins, Colorado. He was 95.

One of nine children, "Art" was born in Pittsford, New York on June 16, 1923 to John Henry Zimmerman and Mary M. Zimmerman (née Sonnenfroh). Art left home at 16 landing fulltime employment the following year with the Eastman Kodak Company. In January 1943, he took a leave of absence from Kodak to enlist with the US Army Air Forces. Corporal Zimmerman's wartime service was spent stationed in both Brazil with the 1152nd Army Air Force Base Unit and in various stations in North Africa.

Following his Army discharge, Art returned home and resumed working at Kodak Park in Rochester for the next 25 years. At 27, Art became one of the youngest shift foremen in the company's history, leading Kodak to send him to the Rochester Institute of Technology for further training in Industrial Supervision. His expertise was recognized in 1970 when Kodak included Art among the first Kodak management staff assigned to relocate and commence operations at the newly constructed Kodak Colorado Division in Windsor. He worked there until his retirement in 1983.

Art met the love of his life, Catherine Marie Bauerschmidt, at a YMCA dance in 1948. They were married on February 5, 1949, and went on to raise nine children.

Art was an active member of the Sports Car Club of America. Weekends were often spent at car races as a member of the Race Communications Association, working as a flagman at racetracks around the Northeast, and especially at the United States Grand Prix in Watkins Glen, New York. Besides car racing, Art also enjoyed horse racing (both thoroughbred and harness) and later greyhound racing.

Art often took the family to Mendon Ponds during the summer for swimming and Cobb's Hill during the winter for ice skating. He was an avid hunter, of both small and large game. In Colorado, he combined his love of horseback riding with elk hunting in the mountains around Creede. Other hobbies included fishing; first throughout New York State, later around the Red Feather Lakes and Poudre River, and finally on the Texas Gulf Coast.

Besides his parents John and Mary, Art was preceded in death by his beloved wife Catherine, to whom he was married for 68 years. He is survived by children Eric (Caterina), Mark, Mary Lou (Borden), Craig (Carma), Gary, Denise (Pamela), Jon, Jeffrey (Jackie), and Lance (Trisha). Art is also survived by his sister Ruth Stone of Pittsford, New York, 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to especially recognize the loving care provided by the Rehabilitation and Nursing Center of the Rockies in the years following Art's stroke.

Visitation will be held at Bohlender Funeral Chapel in Fort Collins on Thursday, July 12 from 3:00 – 8:00 pm. A Rosary will be said during the Viewing at Bohlender's, starting at 7:00 pm.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Friday, July 13, 2018 at 9:30 am, Father Don Willette presiding. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Grandview Cemetery.
