Alma Munroe

August 11, 1925 — April 12, 2016

Listen to Obituary
Alma (Blehm) Munroe, 90, of Fort Collins passed away peacefully on April 12, 2016, surrounded by family at the Mirasol Green House Homes in Loveland. She was the tenth child of eleven, born to German-from-Russian immigrant parents, George and Eva (Foos) Blehm, on August 11, 1925, in Windsor, Colorado.

Alma was baptized and confirmed at the Evangelical Lutheran Zion Church in Windsor. She attended school in Windsor through the eighth grade, then moved to Nebraska to reside with her brother, Herbert and his family. Alma met her husband, Charles, at a dance in Mitchell and they were married January 14, 1947 in Harrisburg, Nebraska. They farmed in Nebraska and Wyoming until moving to Colorado in 1961. They were married for 34 years until their divorce. She was later employed by The Fort Collins Coloradoan.

Alma was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, farm wife, homemaker, and avid Rockies fan, who enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, cooking, canning, and painting ceramics. During corn harvest she kept a steady supply of food prepared for the hired men and was one of the best truck drivers in the field. The love of her heritage was shared with family through Dutch hop polka dancing and traditional kraut bierocks (krautburgers), noodles and butterballs, and rival kuga (coffee cake). Alma was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Fort Collins for 55 years and enjoyed fellowship with the Silver Singles in the past.

She is survived by her son, Charles (Bev) Munroe of Windsor and children Colleen Lawrence, Melanie (Nathan) Gerrard, Dustin (Jen) Munroe, Clint (Erin) Munroe; and daughters, Dixie Knutson of Loveland and children, Heidi Knutson, Holli Knutson, Josh Knutson; Arta Mae (Jim) Bass of Fort Collins and children, Tammy (Doug) Jensen, Todd (Bobbi Tadwalt) Bass, TJ Bass; Lynnette Munroe of Fort Collins; and Janice (Bill) Riegel of Eaton and children, Christina (Patrick) Fry, Jessica (Matt) Beaver, Teleah Riegel; and ten great-grandchildren. Other survivors include her sisters, Helen Gorr of Torrington, Wyoming and Emma Guettler of North Platte, Nebraska; sister in law, Lillian Blehm of Mitchell, Nebraska; brother in law, Fred Ehrman of Oregon and numerous nieces and nephews.

Alma was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Herbert Blehm, Hubert Blehm, Harold Blehm, Edwin Blehm; and sisters Lydia Foos, Amelia Ruff, Pauline Kindsfater, and Martha Blehm.

A memorial service to celebrate Alma's life will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, April 22, 2016, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 1200 South Taft Hill Road in Fort Collins. A private interment will be held on a later date.
