Leonard Richard Haferman, 80, long time resident of Fort Collins passed away December 23, 2017 from a fall earlier that day related to his long battle with diabetes and Parkinson's.
Born Easter Sunday, March 28, 1937, in Talmage, Nebraska he was the third child of Rev. Siegfried and Josephine Haferman. They moved to Elkhorn, Nebraska in 1948 where he enjoyed competing in several sports and made several life-long friends.
He married his high school sweetheart Janet Jean Ahlbrandt on June 17th,1956 and they celebrated their 60th anniversary in 2016, one month before Janet passed away.
He was a born engineer and very mechanically gifted which brought him success in his 40+ year career at Teledyne WaterPik. There he was one of the original employees and assembled the very first WaterPik oral irrigation device. Prior to that he had worked at Woodward Governor as a machinist and served in the U.S. Navy.
He especially loved his accomplishments as a glider and private pilot, earning his pilot's license even before his drivers license. He also enjoyed tinkering for long hours in his garage, fishing and 35 years worth of trips to the family cabin.
He was an active and faithful member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church (originally Bethlehem Lutheran) for 64 years, starting when his father was called to pastor in 1953, and where he met Janet.
He is survived by three children; Valerie Connor (Scott), Jon Haferman (Debbie), and Dan Haferman (Kelly), five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, who all live in the area. He is also survived by his older sister, Betty Saeger from Connersville, Indiana, an older brother Bob Haferman (Cleone) and a younger sister Dorothy Northrup, who both live in Fort Collins.
The memorial service celebrating Leonard's life, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 12 at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 1200 South Taft Hill Road, Fort Collins.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Pathways Hospice or the Parkinson's Foundation.
