Raymond Lincoln Newman
February 12, 1929 – February 4, 2026
Fort Collins, Colorado resident Raymond Lincoln Newman passed away Thursday, February 5, 2026, at his home in Fort Collins. He was one week away from 97 years of age.
Ray was born February 12, 1929 in Wagner South Dakota. The youngest of five and only son of Raymond Newman and Flossie (Troxell) Newman. He graduated from Wagner High School in 1947 and later enlisted in the US Air Force where he served from 1952 - 1955. He spent a tour in Occupied Japan and was an armament instructor on B-29 bombers at Lowry AF Base.
Ray met Helen Susan Reid in graduate school in the summer of 1956 at Colorado University in Boulder. They later married on June 15, 1957, in Denver and were together until Susan's death in 2024 after nearly 67 years of marriage.
Both Ray and Susan became English teachers in Lander Wyoming where they began raising their three children, Margo (b. 1962), Forrest (b. 1964), and Valerie (b. 1967). The family moved to Fort Collins, Colorado in 1967 where Ray became an English teacher and Susan a theme grader at Lincoln Junior High School. Ray joined Susan in the business that Susan started, All-Sports Trophies, in 1974 until his retirement in 2017.
Ray was a Renaissance man. He was an artist, a carpenter, an author, a poet, and antique furniture restorer where he specialized in the re-caning of antique chairs. He also built a two-story addition to their house to accommodate his growing family on Scott Avenue where he spent the rest of his life.
Ray is preceded in death by his wife, Susan, and his five sisters, Thelma, Fern, Deyelda, and Lafaye.
