Listen to Obituary
Ned Daugherty of Fort Collins, 84, passed away on June 25, 2019. Ned served on the faculty of the Chemistry Department at CSU for nearly 40 years. He was highly regarded as a teacher and pre-med advisor. He maintained relationships with former students and advisees for many years after they graduated from CSU. Ned obtained his undergraduate degree from Purdue University and PhD from Michigan State University. He did post-graduate work at Los Alamos and a sabbatical at the pediatric lab at University Hospital in Denver.

He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Kathy; daughter Lynn (Rick); granddaughters (Emily and Maggie); his son Mike (Kathy), as well as his faithful golden retriever Katy.

A transplant from Indiana, Ned enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and hiking in the Rockies, the western US and Canada. In later years, he and Kathy enjoyed a cabin near Red Feather Lakes.

In addition, Ned had a diverse range of talents and interests including:
• Long distance running; completing three marathons, several half marathons and 10ks.
• Flying; he obtained a recreational pilots license, fulfilling a long time dream. A friend recently shared that Ned enjoyed cool summer mornings because they were perfect flying weather.
• Oil painting; particularly mountain landscapes.
• Skeet and target shooting; a talent handed down from his father.
• British comedies, some of his favorites were Monty Python's Flying Circus, 'Allo, 'Allo, and Fawlty Towers. Lines from these shows became ingrained in family conversations.
• Travel; including much of the western US. Although Lynn and Mike might not have appreciated the pre-dawn departures and the failure to stop for historical markers at the time, they treasure the families' trips to many National Parks and the coast of Oregon. Ned and Kathy also visited Mexico and Canada, as well as Samoa, while Mike was a Peace Corps Volunteer.
• Softball; when the CSU Chemistry Department fielded a softball team, the "Cellar Dwellers", in the early 1980's, Ned was catcher and adopted the motto "Old age and treachery will always overcome youth and skill."
• Reading; Ned was an avid reader and an early adapter of e-books. He enjoyed mysteries, thrillers, Walt Kelly's Pogo Possum and nonfiction works about a wide range of subjects, including WWII.

Ned was also well known for his cooking and baking. The baking began when he took a class from the owner of Sitzman's Bakery. Soon Ned was turning out breads, cinnamon rolls, cream puffs and other treats. Some of his signature dishes included Chicken Cordon Bleu, Turkey Chimichangas, Stollen, Kraut Burgers, Stuffed Manicotti, Yorkshire Puddings, Caramel Pie, Key Lime Pie and Caramel Pecan Rolls.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2PM on July 12, 2019 at Peace with Christ Lutheran Church, 1412 West Swallow Road, Fort Collins.
