Listen to Obituary
On November 21st the world lost some of its sparkle when the radiance that was Peggy's bright self faded to dark. After 2 years of fighting with valor – the final victory went to cancer. First colon cancer and then liver cancer waged war in her body. Through it all she had the upper hand, until she didn't. Peg was the person we all strive to be. She always looked for the best in everyone. She never said a bad thing about anyone. Peg was special.
She was born on May 21, 1955 in Colorado Springs, CO to Marion Donnally Richardson, who grew up near Boston, MA with had a great appreciation for women's rights. Her father, Morris Virgil Richardson was a cattleman from Simla, Colorado, who joined to navy to see the world. Together they formed a family with Peggy, the first born and then Douglas Virgil (Valerie) born in 1957 and Mark Jay (Emma) following in 1959. After her parents were divorced, her father remarried Jayne Orin Mitchell Pyatt and together they added to Peg's family with bothers Greg Mitchell (Tammy), Pete Pyatt (LeAnn), Garry Morris Richardson (Jon) and Rodney Allen Richardson (Andrea). Peg enjoyed her early years on the ranch and talked often about working alongside her father, grandfather and brothers with the livestock.
It wasn't long before everyone realized that Peggy had some developmental challenges. After grade school in Simla, she attended special schooling in Julesburg, CO and spent her high school years at the White Bird School in Loveland. At graduation she worked for Kodak in a program facilitated by Foothills Gateway for a number of years while living in Fort Collins with her mother. Upon retirement from the Kodak program, Peg volunteered at the Fort Collins Senior Center and participated in many projects with Colorado Special Olympics both as an Olympian and as a coach. In recent years, Peg was the inspirational coach for the Red Sox Special Olympic softball team of Fort Collins. She was also very proud to represent the disabled at the United Methodist Women's Conference and participated in Camp Hope for several years.
When her mother's health deteriorated and Marion subsequently died, Peg lived first with her brother Doug in Wellington, CO. While she liked being back in the ranch environment with open spaces and livestock, she missed her friends and the city life. In April of 2014 she moved into a host home in Fort Collins with Host Mom - Christine Knapp and roommates Sarah and Andrea. During this time she spent several days a week attending activities at Fort Collins MindSet, an adult Day Program (a division of Elderhaus). Through Mindset, she developed new friendships and she was able to help with a myriad of programs including Meals on Wheels, the Mindset dance group, and bible studies. Peg also attended monthly dances at the Fort Collins Senior Center and the annual Senior Prom co-sponsored by Mindset/Elderhaus and Poudre Valley High School, and was a favorite at the Wellington Senior Center on Wednesdays.
Throughout it all – Peg loved reading and travel. She was so proud of her trips to Scotland to trace the lives of her Gair, Campbell and Stewart ancestors. She loved history and rejoiced in walking the halls of the Alamo with the ghosts of Davy Crockett, she knelt at the grave of Calamity Jane, a kindred spirit.
We all are at a loss without her uncanny memory for who married who, produced who and when. While Peg wasn't able to count change from a $20 bill, she did instill humanity in all of us. We are less without her light to shine the way.
A memorial service will be held for Peggy on Tuesday, November 29th at Christ United Methodist Church located at 306 E Drake Road, Fort Collins, CO at 11am, lunch will be provided following the service in the Fellowship Hall. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery in Fort Collins at 1:30 pm.
