In Loving Memory of John H. Smith III

John H. Smith III, 88, of Fort Collins, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of patience and kindness. Born on January 3, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois, to John and Helen Smith, John was the elder brother to Donald and Judy.

John's career was in the field of industrial sales of liquid solids separation equipment. He excelled as an engineer and salesman, and was proud to be part of the industry which played a crucial role in removing chemical pollutants from rivers nationwide.

John's heart belonged to Karen, his high school sweetheart. Together for 70 years, they nurtured a loving family of three children: John, Annette, and Bonnie. He was a beloved and playful grandfather to Kelson, Trenton, Deltin, Braxtin, Haydin, and Megin, and a devoted great grandfather to Oliver.

John and Karen hosted numerous international students as house guests welcoming new friends from around the globe. There was always much laughter and sharing of stories and cultures. John treated everyone with respect and believed deeply in the inherent dignity of people. He often said that we are more alike than different. Throughout his life, John served on various church boards and committees and enjoyed the servant role.

John is survived by his devoted wife, Karen, their children John Smith IV and wife Robin, Annette and husband Dan Bruce, and Bonnie Smith, his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchild, as well as his siblings, Donald and Judy.

Known for his infectious smile and quick wit, John had a unique ability to uplift those around him. His comments, always good-natured, were delivered with a twinkle in his eye. A true listener, he offered great hugs and always encouraged others.

John H. Smith III will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his love, laughter, and the light he brought into the lives of so many.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 6th at 11:00 AM at Heart of the Rockies Christian Church (Disciples) in Fort Collins.
