Freeman George Schofield

Freeman George Schofield, 101, of Pierce, Colorado bid this earth farewell February 12, 2016. He was born on August 10, 1914 in Parsons, Kansas, to Lester Schofield and Helen LeMoine Schofield. The family traveled by covered wagon to Bellvue, Colorado, in 1920, where they lived in a large two-story house, known as the Beehive Hotel.

He attended Cache la Poudre school in LaPorte, Colorado. His prowess in football earned him a scholarship to Princeton, which he was unable to accept. He graduated in the spring of 1934. He married his sweetheart, Hattie Rebecca Mackey on July 29, 1934. They had three children, Larry Freeman Schofield, Elma Josephine Johnston, and Betty June Friend.

Freeman worked for Boettcher Cement Plant for forty years, retiring in June of 1978. The couple sold the family home in Bellvue and moved to Topeka, Kansas in 1987 to be near daughter, Betty. In November 1994 they moved back to Colorado, settling in Pierce in a home they shared with Betty and her husband, Larry Friend.

During his long life, he enjoyed many hobbies: gardening, hunting, fishing, camping, oil painting, lapidary, woodworking, and leather crafting. He entertained family and friends with his storytelling. A few years ago he wrote his memoirs as a legacy for family. He had a keen interest in sports, especially following his favorite teams. He had an inquisitive mind, and loved reading and learning. He was an affable, true friend to many, known as a steadfast and honest man to all who knew him.

Along with his wife, Freeman was active in their church. His life was a testament to his deep abiding faith in God.

Loving and devoted patriarch, husband, brother, and father, Freeman is survived by his eldest sister, Lottie King, who will be 103 in March; son, Larry F. Schofield and wife, Lorene of Circleville, Ohio; daughter, Elma Jo Johnston and husband, Kenneth Johnston of Klamath Falls, Oregon; daughter, Betty June Friend and husband, Larry Friend of Pierce; Grandchildren: Christina Taylor, Sondra Nowajeski, Deana McCabe, Norma Brown, Tamela Moreno, Roxan Powell, Heidi Pamplin, Heather Breckenridge, David Friend, Angela Huck, and spouses of each. Also surviving are thirty great grandchildren and twelve great-great grand children.

Freeman was preceded in death by his wife, Hattie Rebecca Mackey Schofield; grandsons, Shawn Michael Friend and Stephen Moore; and sister, Zella Mae Woods who died January 17, 2016.

The Funeral Service will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, February 26, 2016 at Bohlender Funeral Chapel. Graveside Service at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at Walden Cemetery in Walden, Colorado.
